The mattress for back pain

There are several solutions to relieve back pain: exercises, back pain mattress, belts, massage, acupuncture, etc.

We spend almost a third of our lives in a bed, so it is important to choose a suitable one!

When to change your back pain mattress?

Good to know: it is advisable to change mattresses and bed bases at the same time, because not all mattresses go with all bed bases!

I recommend you to change the bedding (mattress and bed base) every 7 or 8 years, and in any case not to make it last more than 10 years.

Poor bedding can be responsible for back pain. If the surface of your mattress is not flat and regular, but forms hollows and bumps, it should be replaced.

Which mattress to choose for your back pain?

If you suffer from back pain, I recommend you to use a rather firm mattress without being hard. A mattress that is too hard is as harmful as a mattress that is too soft. Above all, you must be comfortable. 

Feel free to test the bed in the store:

  1. Your spine should remain straight whether you are lying on your back or side.
  2. You must not sink into the mattress:
  • If the back is rounded, like in a hamac, the mattress is not hard enough.
  • If when you lie down not all parts of your body are resting on the mattress, it is probably too hard.

There are several types of mattresses:  

Good to know: for a double bed, when the difference in weight or size between the partners is very important, I recommend you to use separate mattresses and bed bases.

  5. waterbeds, the most suitable for back pain

Know that foam and wool mattresses may lose their firmness and support qualities more quickly than latex and spring mattresses. Latex and spring mattresses are best for people with allergic reactions.

Some mattresses have different density levels in different body parts and are especially well suited for people with back problems.

The right sleeping positions

Lying on your back or side, the best position is the one that keeps you asleep. I don't recommend you to lie on your stomach if you suffer from back pain, as it is very stressful for the spine.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, I recommend you to sleep on the side (less sleep apnea than in the dorsal position).

Buy and choose a back pain mattress

Sleep quality is essential for your physiological balance. A good mattress is therefore essential. Between spring or foam mattresses, different fillings and hangings, choosing a mattress can become difficult. I will assist you in your search.

1. Different kinds of mattresses

You will have to choose your mattress according to the bed you want to fit: a fixed mattress fits a "normal" bed, a relaxation mattress to an articulated bed, a clic-clac or bz mattress for a sofa bed....

2. Selection criteria for a back pain mattress

Hanging, texture, sizes... Different criteria are to be taken into account to compare the mattresses and find the one that suits your needs.

3. Choose the bed base

I recommend you to choose a bed base according to the kind of mattress hanging you have (or vice versa). For example, the lattice frame is ideal for foam, latex or water mattresses. The spring base, better suited to a spring mattress, will reinforce the flexibility and softness of your mattress. In any case, it is better to choose a mattress base of the same brand as the mattress because the base will strengthen and sustain the mattress technology.

4. Mattress accessories

Once you have found your mattress, you must also provide some additional accessories such as the mattress cover, the mattress protection or the bed base cover. The key to this is an optimal lifetime for your mattress.

5. Purchase your mattress

Do you hesitate between several mattresses? It is important to compare prices. You can then buy your mattress on the web, at a bedding specialist or a furniture store or in a department store.

6. Install and use your mattress

It is not easy, but it is necessary: a few small gestures will extend the lifetime of your mattress, such as a change of direction, for example. Professionals recommend that you change all bedding every 10 years. In any case, it is recommended to change the bed base at the same time as the mattress.
